I encountered Michael Rothkopf at several stages of my career. He bought my old bicycle when I was a graduate student at Rutgers. I worked with him in the DIMACS REU program when I was at DIMACS. I was part of a small group studying papers on auctions at Rutgers. He was a nice person and a good teacher. I am very sad that he has passed away. |

Mike and I were classmates in the MIT/Sloan PhD program; and met often over the years at INFORMS functions. I was always impressed by his personable energy and concerns for the practical relevence of academic research and teaching. His long and tireless contributions to the profession and INFORMS publications shall have an enduring impact on many of us. |

Wow. I've clearly been out of the loop here at Yahoo!, because I only just learned of Mike's passing.
Mike was a wonderful scholar who cared much more about learning the truth than he did about acquiring career status. He was also a wonderful, kind-hearted man.
He inspired me in a way that will forever influence the direction and spirit of my life. |

i wanted to express my condolences regarding mike's untimely death.
i worked and collaborated with him when he was at LBNL as the head of our Energy Analysis Department in the mid-1980s. He was an important mentor to me during that period as I was a young scientist.

Laura, you might not remember me but I worked for Mike at RUTCOR while he was editor of INTERFACES. I was looking up his address and found out he had passed away. I am so shocked and saddened. Mike had the office next door to me at Smeal. We would bump into each other regularly, either in the hallways or just dropping by each other's offices to chat. I was truly amazed at the scope and depth of his knowledge, and no matter what topic we discussed, he seemed to have an interesting anecdote to share. He was genuine in every way, and we miss him here. |

Professor Rothkopf was one of the kindest professors I had during my time at Rutgers. As Noahm mentioned, he had us over at his house for a barbeque which will always be one of my fondest memories of my senior year.
You could tell that he thoroughly enjoyed teaching us.
I went back a year later for a recruiting event and he was excited to see me. 5 years later my younger brother was lucky to have him as well.

Not only was Professor Rothkopf a great teacher, but he was a really kind person. I remember how he invited our entire class over to his home for a pizza party to celebrate our graduation from the business school. No other professor dared to organize such a friendly gesture for his students, but of course, this was his nature. |

Dr. Rothkopf's office was a few doors down from mine. He would often stop by to say hello and was sincerely interested in what we were doing within the Center for Supply Chain Research. At his first opportunity at Penn State, he sat "front row" at a Center SC leaders forum and diligently took notes! So honored to have had him here at Penn State. |

Mike was genuine, as a person and as a scholar, always true to his values and beliefs, generous with his time and his friendship. He worked on the right research problems (the problem had to be both important and real to merit his attention) and championed the right position on issues of importance, even if that position did not reward him personally. He was a superb role model for both his students and his colleagues and will be sorely missed by all of us. |
